With a population of about 380 thousand people Iceland is tiny but the krona punches well above its weight in terms of volatility. The 2008 financial crisis absolutely obliterated the ISK when all three major banks collapsed simultaneously.. the currency lost about half its value and they had to bring in capital controls that stayed in place until 2017. These days things are much calmer but the krona is still sensitive to tourism flows which became Icelands biggest industry after the crisis and fishing which has been the backbone of the economy forever. The Central Bank of Iceland tends to run relatively high interest rates which can attract carry trade interest but the liquidity is so thin that it doesnt take much to move it.
